    One after another, more than 200 residents of the Hill District filed into the Wesley Center AME Church on Wednesday evening to fill out four-page applications for better futures.

    The Hill District was in the spotlight at the 17th annual YWCA Racial Justice Awards Nov. 19. Past and present Hill District residents as well as those with a vested interest in the neighborhood swept most award categories as evidence of the area’s ongoing revitalization.

    The Bank of New York Mellon today committed $3 million over six years to the Hill District through the state's Neighborhood Partnership Program.


    The money -- $500,000 each year -- will go toward community development, job training, affordable housing, family-building programs and the arts -- projects identified by an application committee. It is part of the Community Benefits Agreement that was worked out among the One Hill Coalition, the city, the county, the Penguins and the Sports & Exhibition Authority.

    A local corporation made a major commitment to continuing development in the Hill District.

    Bank of New York Mellon will provide $3 million to revitalize the neighborhood over a six-year period.

    The funds will go directly to the neighborhood partnership program and will be used for education, job training and community development as the area is reshaped around the Penguins' new arena.

    The announcement regarding the first recipients of the money is expected to happen in 2009.
