    PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It was 45 years ago when bulldozers leveled the lower Hill District to make way for the Civic Arena, but the promise of economic development did not follow.

    Now, with a new arena planned for across the street - the city, the county and the Penguins don't want history to repeat itself. So in the next few days they will present a plan to a coalition of Hill District leaders.

    The Hill District should get a grocery store, a community center and jobs as part of the new arena deal, but not a development fund to spend as residents see fit, said Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl yesterday.

    His comments during and after the taping of "KD/PG Sunday Edition" mirrored the position Penguins' representatives outlined Tuesday, after some 50 Hill residents and advocates packed a city planning commission hearing on the arena.

    Feedback from North Side residents will top the agenda of a meeting tonight on Pittsburgh's slots casino.

    Northside United, a campaign of the group Pittsburgh United, will host the meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. at Martin Luther King School, North Side. Music and entertainment will be provided.

    No arena without a deal was the battle cry of some 50 Hill District residents and their supporters yesterday, as they urged the Pittsburgh City Planning Commission to hold off on giving the Penguins approval to build until there's a written agreement with the community in place.

  •   Hill residents accuse city of stalling on arena benefits

    A coalition of Hill District residents Tuesday accused city officials of stalling on signing a deal that would guarantee jobs, a grocery store and other amenities to neighbors of a planned $290 million hockey arena.

    "What we have seen so far shows an arena that turns its back on the Hill District neighborhoods," said Carl Redwood Jr., chairman of the One Hill Coalition.
