    As a former labor organizer and political campaign operative, David Morehouse said he can appreciate some of the tactics employed by the One Hill Community Benefits Agreement Coalition, but that doesn’t mean the Pittsburgh Penguins president is not going to respond.

    Does Pittsburgh really want a giant, lighted sign at the end of its grand boulevard? Does the city really want a concrete behemoth looming over its sparkling waterfront casino? Does it really want to drop a new arena at the foot of the Hill District without ensuring significant improvement to the surrounding neighborhood?

    The answer to all three questions is "no."

    On January 14th the Pittsburgh Planning Commission's approved the Penguins' new $290 million arena. The community coalition One Hill subsequently filed an appeal on February 12th to overturn the decision. They cited a variety of flaws in the design the planning process and most importantly the lack of a community benefits agreement.

    Milwaukee's 'Big Step' may be model

    Preparing for construction work that includes an arena and a casino, officials from the city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, community groups and unions will travel to Milwaukee Monday to take a look at a much-touted program to connect people with jobs.

    A 20-person contingent will spend two days learning about Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership Big Step, which places some 500 people a year in jobs or apprenticeships.

    One Hill Coalition seeks benefits plan

    One Hill Coalition is urging county leaders to help it secure a community benefits agreement as part of plans to build a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
     

    Members asked Allegheny County Council on Tuesday to hold a public meeting on the CBA and get involved in negotiations with the Penguins and other city and county officials.

    Penguins update

    After weeks of negotiations without a CBA, the Pittsburgh One Hill Coalition announced yesterday that it had filed a lawsuit to block construction of the new Penguins Arena. The suit , filed just before the appeals deadline, seeks to overturn the approval of the arena's master plan. One Hill wants work on the arena to be postponed until a CBA is finalized, and the lawsuit may be dropped if a deal is reached.

    A Hill District group filed an appeal Wednesday seeking to overturn the Pittsburgh Planning Commission's approval of the Penguins' new $290 million arena.

    The One Hill Community Benefits Coalition hopes the appeal filed in Common Pleas Court, and the specter of possible construction delays, will pressure city and county officials to approve an agreement that provides development around Mellon Arena's replacement.

    PITTSBURGH -- The master plan for a new Penguins arena in Pittsburgh's Hill District is going to court. The community group One Hill Coalition said it's doing all it can so the Hill District isn't left behind.

    Negotiations between the city, county, Penguins and Hill District leaders still haven't produced a community benefits agreement. One Hill wants to keep the issue in play and is asking a judge to send the new arena's master plan back to the Planning Commission for more work.

    The push for arena-related benefits for the Hill District could come to a head today, as negotiators sit down for talks and neighborhood leaders likely appeal a key approval.

    Today is the deadline for challenging the city planning commission's approval of the arena master plan, and the One Hill Community Benefits Agreement Coalition has scheduled a 1:30 p.m. news conference at the City-County Building. That's where they would file an appeal to Common Pleas Court.

    PITTSBURGH -- The One Hill Coalition was at Monday's Sports and Exhibition Authority meeting, calling for support of the new community benefits agreement as part of the Penguins arena plan in the Hill District.One Hill, once bouncing with encouragement, believing it was establishing a partnership to make the Hill District part of the master plan for the new hockey arena, was anything but on Monday.

    The group said it feels like the city and county are sending token representation to meetings and therefore keeping the process stuck in neutral.

    Pittsburgh and Allegheny County officials have "toyed with" Hill District residents seeking the promise jobs, housing and businesses for the Hill before work begins on a $290 million Penguins hockey arena, a top Hill activist said Monday.

    "We feel that in some ways community members are being toyed with in this process where people come to the table but not in a serious manner, and you're just going to string us (along)," said Carl Redwood Jr., chairman of the One Hill Community Benefits Coalition.
