    A Hill District group seeking corporate and public subsidies to improve the area around a proposed $290 million multipurpose arena announced details Wednesday of a tentative agreement with city and county officials.

    Carl Redwood, chairman of the One Hill Community Benefits Agreement Coalition, said the preliminary deal must receive approval from its 100 members on May 3.

    "This is a historic event in terms of Pittsburgh because the Hill District has taken a stand to help look at how development is done," he said.

    PITTSBURGH -- A Pittsburgh Hill District group said it has reached a tentative community benefits agreement with the Penguins, the city, Allegheny County and the Sports and Exhibition Authority.

    The One Hill Coalition has been negotiating with the groups about improvements to the community near where the Pens new hockey arena will be built. One Hill leaders said they want to make sure the community isn’t left behind after the arena is built.

    Casino financing remains unsecured

    Two top Majestic Star officials said Tuesday the casino operator doesn't have enough money to build the North Shore slots palace, but will soon.

    Majestic Star general manager Ed Fasulo said worries from local politicians that the casino won't be built because of sweeping changes to the financing have been "blown out of proportion."

    Mayor hopes to chat with casino owner about $3 million pledge

    Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl hopes to meet with casino owner Don Barden as soon as tomorrow in an effort to ensure that $3 million in development money pledged to the Hill District remains available for use in the city.

    Last week, Mr. Barden filed a petition with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board asking permission to eliminate a pledge in his casino license application to put $3 million over three years into development in the Hill.

    About 25 North Side activists showed up at Continental Real Estate's offices in Homestead Friday to demand a meeting about development they say is long overdue.

    More than 30 people seeking a community benefits agreement over a hotel development on the North Shore showed up at the developer's offices in Homestead this morning demanding a meeting.

    Representatives for Pittsburgh United and Northside United gathered at Continental Real Estate Cos. offices in the Waterfront complex to try to meet with Barry Ford, Continental's president of development in Pittsburgh. Mr. Ford was not in the office.
