    It was all smiles, handshakes and signatures at Freedom Corner on Tuesday. After a difficult gestation, a long-awaited community benefits agreement between the Pittsburgh Penguins, residents of the Hill District and Pittsburgh's political leadership finally fell into place.

    Hill District leaders see a new beginning as arena agreement is signed

    For leaders of one Hill District group, an agreement signed at historic Freedom Corner yesterday represents not an end, but a start to efforts to revitalize a struggling neighborhood showing signs of rebirth.

    PITTSBURGH -- The redevelopment of Pittsburgh’s Hill District was ensured on Tuesday with the signing of a historic $8.3 million document.
  •   Hill to get $2 million aid for grocery, more

    Hill District residents will get $2 million for a grocery store, first dibs on jobs at the new Uptown arena and a chance to lay out their vision for the neighborhood under a community benefits agreement to be finalized this morning.

    The contract among One Hill Neighborhood Coalition, the Penguins and government agencies means the arena will provide benefits for its most immediate neighbors, negotiators said.

    The Steelers have revived their plan to build an entertainment complex next to Heinz Field. Their proposed $12 million amphitheater would sit on 3.9 acres and have indoor-outdoor use.


    That's a fine amenity that would enhance the North Shore, a mixed neighborhood soon to have a slots casino and hotels along with major-league sports, offices, the Carnegie Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum. We're all for the business venture, but not the $4 million state subsidy the developer wants to support the project.

    Oh, I used to be disgusted and now I try to be amused.

    That old Elvis Costello line leapt to mind when I read that the Steelers and Continental Real Estate want a $4 million subsidy to build a $12 million indoor/outdoor concert venue by Heinz Field.

    Want $4 million for North Shore project

    The Steelers and a Columbus, Ohio, developer are seeking a $4 million public subsidy to help with the construction of a $12 million entertainment complex on the North Shore that was the subject of a controversial land deal last week.

    Frank Kass, chairman of Continental Real Estate Cos., said yesterday the state grant is needed to make the economics of the proposed project work.
